Ladies' guide to daily outfits and accessories that you can afford with items even from your own closet

Here's my friend, Jenna, and I at PacSun, years ago, wearing the coat I actually bought that day and still currently own and wear. I've gotten TONS of compliments on it over the years.
Since I'm fortunate enough to live in the Midwest and who doesn't love experiencing negative degree temperatures, like I have the past week, I thought it was an appropriate time to talk about outwear. Whether you're in the need for something warmer or you're just looking to get a new look, I've pulled together some cute items that you can find right now. You don't have to sacrifice being warm to look trendy and cute.

The staple items that everybody who experiences cold weather should own:
  • Warm Coat (emphasis on the WARM)
  • Hat
  • Gloves or Mittens (I prefer mittens because they keep your fingers warmer)
  • Scarf
  • Headband (You can find great ones on Etsy)
  • Boots

This is my absolute FAVORITE time of year. I mostly look forward to Christmas Eve at my Grandma's. It's been a tradition for me ever since I was born, and it's only grown with all the additions that have been made to our family. Every Christmas Eve, we all go to church and then to my Grandma's house for food, drinks, conversation, lots of laughter, and of course, presents. One of the big things leading up to this night is deciding, what to wear, and another part of the tradition is that we always dress up. I have found some great options, if you're like my family and dress up at anytime around the holidays. They are great for whatever you might be looking for with different styles for different shapes and sizes. I don't want to give out quite yet what I'm planning on wearing this year, but......

It's time to find the perfect holiday attire for you!

I found this picture on Pinterest and thought the leopard and turquoise combo was great! Unfortunately, I don't have a turquoise necklace. So, I decided to make this my own and you can definitely do the same as long as you have something with leopard print and something turquoise. I decided to wear my pale turquoise colored shirt and leopard scarf, and I even paired it with my pale turquoise colored earrings (pictured below), OR I could have worn the same shirt with my leopard skirt, but the options are endless. You can also see the boots I wore with my outfit.

This came to me after trying on numerous things this morning and knowing I wanted to do layers since it's a bit chilly here in the Midwest, and finally it just clicked! After much deliberation and hoping for a delay for school since it had rained/snowed throughout the night and planning on having a bit more time to pick out my outfit, it didn't happen, but with the quick decision I made, I think a pretty cute outfit still came out of it. For a while, I was really good about picking my outfits out the night before. I even bought a wall hanger with 5 hooks on it for my closet to get all my outfits ready on Sunday for the week, but my husband still has yet to hang it up. We'll just say that's why my procrastination has reared it's ugly head into my life again.....

(You can see below, but I paired my outfit with dark brown riding boots.)

- Tan Blazer - H&M
- White Ruffled Sweater - Maurice's (I pinned up the bottom of the sweater because it was a bit too long for my liking to go with this outfit. It helped because then it gave me more ruffles up top!)
- Dark Brown Tank Top - Marshall's ($8)
- Green Pants - Marshall's ($18)
- Dark Brown Riding Boots - MIA from DSW ($80)
- Pearl Necklace - Target ($18)

I don't know what it was about Christina Aguilera's outfit last night on The Voice, but it definitely caught my eye and I loved it! My husband even said something about liking it too.

I know that it's an out-of-the-box, adventurous outfit, but it's worth a shot to try it out. It's something different and I'm here to help you get it for cheap versus the ridiculous cost that it was probably for Christina.

Unlike Christina Aguilera, the majority of us can't wear hats to work. So, this will have to be more of a night/weekend outfit, or just wear it without the hat and put it on after work. However, the hat definitely makes the look complete.

I don't necessarily have these items or time to run out and get them, so I've searched and found them at reasonable costs and for purchase online. I put pictures in the gallery below with links to go to the items.
- Red Suspenders - Express ($20.93)
- Striped Button Up Shirt - I found shirts at Target and H&M (Places and prices are below with pictures), but I'm sure you could find something at other stores too.
- Floppy Wool Felt Fedora - Nordstrom's ($38; comes in 4 different colors)
Since we can't see the bottom, I would pair it with.....
- Skinny Jeans or Boyfriend Jeans - I always buy my skinny jeans from Target about $25 on average and Gap has great boyfriend jeans for $69.95.
- Oxfords - Not Rated Jute Oxford Pump from DSW($42.95; I have these and they are to die for!!!), but DSW has a wide variety if you don't like these. Otherwise, you could wear a pair of beige or nude heels.

I thought I had gotten this look from Pinterest, but as I went back to find the picture on Pinterest, I could only find a lot of similar looks. I think I must have just gotten the idea to put this look together from all the different things I've seen.

The first look I have (pictured above) is a great day look. The second look (pictured below),  I swapped out the boots for a pair of beige heels to make it more of a night look. However, you could still rock the heels for work. In addition, I posted one of the similar Pinterest look alikes that is a dress option of the look and sporting a scarf, but I do love how the pearls give the look a whole different feel.

I know it can get a little scary when it comes to talking about adding patterns to your wardrobe, especially if you're used to wearing just plain, straight colors, but it's time to make a change. Adding patterns can really add pizzazz and a new element to your look, and if you think you don't look good or can't pull off patterns, that's entirely not true! It's nice trying/doing something different than the run of the mill color. A great way to start easing yourself into patterns is by wearing a scarf with pattern or a shirt with stripes. These are great ways to step outside your comfort zone with a little edge. The next step is to start throwing in some polka dots or simple floral patterns, just something that's a bit more adventurous than stripes or a scarf. After that, you'll be ready to really venture out with your wardrobe and BE BOLD. It's your time to get out there and make a statement. Try doing a totally different patterned shirt, skirt, or dare I say it.... Pants! Be proud and confident because you can and you should!

Pictured above is a shirt I recently got at Target. On clearance it was only $18, and so far today, I have gotten quite a few compliments on it. I just paired it with my Khaki Pencil Skirt from H&M, black tights(that can be found anywhere for cheap), and some red wedge heels I bought years ago from Wet Seal.

The eye is drawn to bright and bold things, and being noticed isn't such a bad thing, especially if you're looking to catch the eye of that special someone. Now get out there and BE BOLD!

My black blazer from Marshall's. It even has a pin striped white and black lining.
Every girl should have at least one blazer in their collection, and I don't mean the big shoulder pad ones from the 80s and 90s. The ones today are cute and sleek. They're a great piece to dress up an outfit, keep it casual with jeans, or impress in an interview. Currently, I own 4 blazers and I'm looking to add at least two more to my collection. As pictured above, I have on a black blazer (must have color) and I paired it with my all time favorite scarf, along with adding some bling by layering on bracelets. Sometimes, I throw on my thick, black rimmed glasses to give it an even more sophisticated look or I'm just too lazy to put my contacts in. In addition, I have blazers in white, tan, and gray (pictured below with where they are from). All my blazers are different lengths, materials, and looks. I highly recommend going a bit different for each blazer you own so that you don't get bored of them! You don't want to have a cartoon closet. I'm looking to add a navy blazer and red blazer, but of course, they are going to look a bit different than the ones I already have. Below is a picture of the navy one I am thinking about getting from Target, but you can find blazers anywhere!

Extra Tip: Don't forget to roll up the sleeves to give the look an extra pop, especially if the blazer is sporting a fun and different lining. This can make the look that much different. You'll see this in the picture of my gray blazer.

Now go out there and put on your blazer, pair it with your favorite heels or boots, throw on some accessories, and you're good to go!
